SMOOTH FAREWELL

Suddenly, it was my last day in Jamaica, and I had to leave this beautiful country. I packed my stuff, said my goodbyes, and was about to call a cab, but one of the @reggaehostel staff told me about a guest was also heading to the airport, and he had a rental car. I talked to the guy, and he agreed to drive together. I dropped my stuff on the backseat, and we were on our way 🚗 For the sake of the story, let's call the guy D.

I remember we were at the traffic light. It was an odd intersection, as there were too many cars and no road signs. D. decided to turn, and suddenly we heard a police siren behind us. Damn it, not now! As law-abiding non-Jamaican citizens, we stopped. The officer approached our car and started asking questions. Long story short, we were not allowed to turn at that intersection. D. tried to explain it to the officer, but no luck. Then D. left the car and started negotiating outside.

All this time, I was sitting in the car thinking whether I would be able to make my flight or not. My thoughts were interrupted when the officer's partner approached my window. He didn't ask any question. He was casually holding his rifle and looking at me. For the record, he didn't point it at me, he just held it. I have seen police officers with a gun, but not with a rifle. That was my first.

A moment later D. returned, said that all good and we drove to the airport. I didn't ask how he managed to negotiate, but, honestly, couldn't care less as I was more concerned about catching my flight 😀

Talk to local law enforcement authority CHECK!
