DANCING IN JAMAICA

Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. On my first night in Kingston, I met a couple (@elo.divague, @mardzz_Kriptic_Klique) who were professional dancehall dancers and teachers. Initially, I thought that dancehall is only for females, but @mardzz_Kriptic_Klique proved me wrong. I asked him to teach me a few steps (moves). After our short lesson, he proposed to join him the next day for a dancehall lesson at his friend's house. Of course, I said 'yes'! 🕺🏽
The next day for 2 hours, I was sweating like hell and learning new steps. If you think that dancehall is easy, think twice. I drank 2 litres of water during the lesson and was damn exhausted, but, boy, it was tons of fun! I also learned that each dance crew has their moves, and sometimes there are dance battles at the parties. That was the ultimate goal of my trip - to attend such a party and see it with my own eyes.
I heard that in a few days there would be a party in Kingston and multiple crews would attend. So, I planned the rest of my trip to make sure I am back in Kingston on time.
Fast forward five days and I am back in Kingston at the dancehall party. What I saw was terrific 🤩 People were going all in! A few people would start dancing, and then a few others would join them and then more, till the whole crew is dancing as one. Then another dance crew would join and battle them. The vibe was just wow!
You could also see how girls are dancing with guys like no tomorrow (18+). I remember thinking that it looks like a big massive sex scene. But this was just on the dancefloor. You can go crazy when you dance, but it means nothing. After the dance was over, everything was back to normal and appropriate.
If you are ever in Jamaica, make sure to attend a dancehall party! It is absolutely worth it!
P.S. A few songs that I heard in Jamaica that remind me of my trip every time I listen to them:
Chronixx - I can
Juice WRLD - Lucid Dreams
Amindi - Pine & Ginger
Stefflon Don - Hurtin' Me
